A shoe that's been at the heart of Saucony's off road offering has always offered much. The new updated Peregrine features a brand new upper and might be the best Peregrine yet.

Our verdict

A very good, no nonsense and very capable off-road shoe offering good cushioning, rock plate protection and enough grip across most terrains.

  • Positive
  • New upper is comfortable and durable
  • Long distance comfort
  • Decent grip on a wide variety of surfaces
  • Negative

First impressions

The Saucony Peregrine has been at the core of the brand’s off-road offering for years now. This new 11th version offers a new upper but the same responsive cushioning and sure-footed grip of the previous model.

We like the versatility of this shoe. It feels cushioned for longer runs on the trails and features additional protection in the form of a rock plate. The grip is good enough for all but the muddiest trails so you’ll feel secure and for a reasonable price.

Midsole

The brand’s PWRRUN foam is responsive. The shoe sits low to the ground having a 4mm offset between heel and forefoot, to aid that off-road stability that you’ll require when twisting and turning up and down muddy or rocky tracks.

Upper

The new upper features an ultra-lightweight and durable mesh bootie construction. The new mesh certainly looks like it would be protective and would resist rips on sharp rocks for example. In our opinion, it is also far more attractive than the previous model. It feels snug on-foot, important in an off-roader, and features minimal overlays to keep the weight down. It also features a rubberised toe bumper for protection and the heel counter is comfortable and holds the heel well. Overall, a very good update.

Sole

The rockplate sits on top of the PWRTRAC arrowed rubber lugs. It is visible through the outsole and really adds a decent level of security to the shoe, especially on a stony or rocky terrain.

The grip works well across a wide range of terrains and is aggressive throughout the whole outsole. We think the shoe could well be worn for hours comfortable if taking on long adventure races for example.

Conclusion

A better looking and improved version of Saucony’s classic off-roader. Comfortable, protective and grippy. Could be worn for short or very long adventures.

For alternatives, look towards the Brooks Cascadia or the Nike Terra Kiger
