The Rincon goes back to its roots by being well cushioned yet lightweight
Back to its best, the Rincon provides you with a soft, maximal cushioned landing in a lightweight package. A shoe that would be great for faster training and race days.
The Rincon was an instant hit with HOKA fans. Ever since the original Clifton was updated, many felt it got too heavy and moved away from its original ‘light but very well cushioned’ design. In this latest model, it looks like the best bits of the earlier Rincon are back with a bang.
For an alternative, check out the Hoka Mach 3 or the beefier Hoka Clifton 6.
The Rincon takes us back to that original with the same CM-EVA foam (just lots of it) to create a soft and lightweight shoe. The outsole has just the minimum in additional rubber at the contact points for durability, but you should expect to see lots of signs of wear across the exposed foam on the sole. Some don’t like this; granted it looks tatty very quickly, but the foam is thick enough to not distract from the ride.
The 5mm heel drop, combined with the low weight is what gives the shoe its fast feel. It promotes a more midfoot gait and with the brand’s cleverly marketed ‘rocker’ helps provide a faster feeling shoe.
The upper is a simple mesh affair, nothing to fancy, but nothing fancy is required in this category of shoe, so it does the job and helps keep the weight down.
The Hoka Rincon features a hi-abrasion rubber placed strategically on the usual high wear areas. Flex grooves provide the necessary flexibility in the deep uppers.
It’s a good choice, perhaps perfect for the heavier runner looking for a lighter shoe without compromising on cushioning.
